too thin and alone
for such terrible times
Who told her friends from home
she was an artist now

who took the time to undress
like the whole world was watching whenever she was alone
whenever she was alone

and so she’d strip before
a white sheet on the floor
with her windows open wide
with her windows open wide

then cafefully and using two fingers spread
vibrant stretches of paint

“would you like to be my friend? What? I’d like that! Talk to you later, bye bye!)

then carefully tending the runs of color
with the dry edge of a thumbnail
or the bridge of her nose
the bridge of her nose

and so she worked in this way
letting herself rediscover
those parts where the paint
had dried
like a new skin
like a new skin

until she folded herself in the sheet and slept

“please, time off. it’s time off because
i thought you were gonnna do your prayers.
i’ll do time off.

bye bye.”
